IF PRESSURE IS THE HAMMER, BE
THE IRON
No one is
immune to pressure. There are many who surrender and there are few who endure.
Analysing The Pressure
What is
pressure and what it does? Pressure as what science says, is a kind of “force”
when somebody feels forced to think or doing act, one is under “pressure”.It is
natural as any other social activities.
Like a child
might feel pressured to score more to fulfil her/his parents expectations.
Even in our daily life, we are remain confuse, take a simplest decision like
which subject we should choose and what cloths we should wear etc.
Hammer
We all have heard some people say, I perform
the best under the pressure. That is the power of pressure when taken
positively. If we tackled well ,it can push us to do our best. This is the pressure which act as
the hammer. So, a deadline can push us to deliver more in a short period of
time.
Leader Must Have The Iron
In 1980
airline strike in Singapore has become a legend. Singapore Airlines has
rigged with plenty of issues, the dispute with pilots union being the biggest.
The union was pressing for higher wages, Facilities and better working
conditions but to get its way, it launched an illegal “work to rule” industrial
action where employees work no more than bare minimum to reduce output and
efficiency. This led to disruption in services, losses worth millions of dollars
in advertisements.
As a last
resort, Lee Kuan Yew the P.M. of Singapore, summoned the SIA pilots and gave
them two options - either they stop the illegal action, resume work with discipline.
Lee was
fully prepared to ground the airline and start all over. It took the pilots
just 65 minutes to realise it was not worth the fight and that is how, he
becomes a legend. He said, “Whoever governs Singapore must have that iron in
him Or give it up. I spend a whole life time building this and as long as I’m
in charge, nobody’s going to know it down.
How To Cultivate The Iron?
India has many examples of such Iron-willed men and women
like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Mahatma Gandhi and recently Indira Nooyi, the Indian
origin former of Pepsi-co CEO, who faced stiff resistance to her approach he/she
took over the reins and late former P.M of India, Shri Atal Bihari Ji who is
still fondly remembered for saying a firm ‘No’ to US sending Indian soldiers
for Iraq war.
There are some qualities
one can observe in all of these people like making right decisions, leadership
and Iron spirit etc.
Leadership rooted remains in following:
Ø Purpose: Strong leaders
are driven by purpose and anything which comes in its way, is sure to be
knocked down.
Ø Focus: Even amidst pressure, leader
do not lose their focus. They always concern about their goals.
Ø Peace full: They think calmly and always
remains calm in under pressure situations. buckling under pressure they remains calm and take next steps.
Ø Morals Values: Strong leaders
drive their strength and guidance from core principles and values like honesty,
integrity, decision making power and social justice etc.
A LEADER IS ONE WHO KNOW THE WAY,GOES THE WAY AND SHOWS THE WAY.
